A major political crisis unfolded this week in Portugal. A scandal over the nationalisation of TAP airline spiralled out of control, and has caused an open conflict between the presidency and the government. António Costa’s Socialist Party was swept into power with an absolute majority in January 2022. Little over a year later, it is racked by scandal and division.
Marxists from Mexico City, Mexico State, Puebla, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Chihuahua, Sonora, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo and Yucatán met to participate in the 2023 Congress of Izquierda Socialista, the Mexican section of the International Marxist Tendency (IMT). It began with a talk on the world situation by Jorge Martín, a leading member of the IMT. The meeting room was full; comrades were excited to discuss what is happening in the world. Although many veteran comrades took part, the congress was notable for the presence of a younger layer, which played a key role in the discussions. There were students in attendance from Mexico’s main universities, as well as young students and workers from a number of different states.
On 1 May, International Workers’ Day, comrades of the International Marxist Tendency (IMT) mobilised all over the globe, raising the standard of revolutionary Marxism. We raised our banners, flags and voices; and through dozens of speeches, and the distribution of thousands of newspapers, books, pamphlets and leaflets, we were able to connect Marxist ideas with more people than ever. La Tendenza Marxista Internazionale ha avvertito fin dal primo giorno che il governo di Gabriel Boric avrebbe strizzato l’occhio alla destra. Fin dal ballottaggio durante le elezioni presidenziali del 2021, abbiamo denunciato l’utilizzo demagogico dei temi dell’immigrazione e della sicurezza pubblica nel corso della campagna elettorale. Con un tale programma di repressione, Boric cerca di conquistare l’appoggio dei settori moderati o apolitici della società e strapparli alla destra. In realtà, semplicemente porta acqua al mulino della destra estremista. Il mese scorso, il Presidente Boric si è fatto promotore di una politica intrisa di tradimenti e voltafaccia, sostenendo la promulgazione di una legge del “grilletto facile” a vantaggio dei “Carabineros” [ndt, forze repressive analoghe ai carabinieri italiani], conosciuta come legge Naín-Retamal.
